Los campamentos de refugiados saharauis enclavados en la Hammada argelina –uno de los peores desiertos del mundo- albergan a más de 200.000 personas de un pueblo en resistencia desde 1975.

Administrativamente, se dividen en cuatro wilayas (provincias) y cada una dividida en dairas (municipios) que toman el nombre de ciudades y pueblos de su tierra ocupada por Marruecos
